How to Calculate Dog Years to Human Years

The idea that one dog year equals seven human years is a myth. The truth is more interesting — and varies by breed size.

Dogs age much faster than humans in their first two years. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, regardless of breed. After that, the rate depends on their size: smaller breeds age more slowly than larger ones.

Why Size Matters

Large and giant breeds age faster because their bodies grow rapidly, which increases cellular stress and oxidative damage. A Great Dane reaches old age around 7–8 years, while a Chihuahua may not be considered senior until 11–12 years.

FAQ

Why isn't 1 dog year = 7 human years accurate?
The ×7 rule ignores that dogs mature much faster in their first two years. A 1-year-old dog is reproductively mature — equivalent to a 15-year-old human, not a 7-year-old. The ratio also changes with breed size.
How do I know my dog's size category?
Weigh your dog and use the categories above. You can also type your breed in the search box and we'll auto-select the correct size for you.
Which conversion method is most accurate?
The AKC breed-size method is considered most practical for dog owners, as it accounts for size-specific aging rates. The UC Davis formula (based on DNA methylation) is the most scientifically rigorous but produces similar results for most ages.
How long do mixed-breed dogs live?
Mixed breeds typically live 1–2 years longer than purebreds of similar size, due to greater genetic diversity. Use the size category that matches your dog's weight.
What's the oldest recorded dog?
The oldest verified dog was Bobi (30 years, 268 days), a Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo. Bluey, an Australian Cattle Dog, lived 29 years, 5 months.
